Ariadne’s Thread (The Navigator of the Heart)

Creator:

Marek Valovič (b. 1974)

Nationality:

Slovak

Date Created:

2024

Medium:

Oil and RSG (Rabbit Skin Glue) Emulsion on Linen

Physical Dimensions:

43.3 x 31.5 in. |110 x 80 cm (H x W)

Technique:

High-Key Underpainting with Sun-Thickened Oil Glazing

Materials:

Executed on hand-primed linen, meticulously prepared with a traditional RSG (Rabbit Skin Glue) emulsion. The process begins with a heightened underpainting (scumbling), where light-toned pigments are worked into the ground to establish structural texture and internal luminosity. In this tenebrist dialogue, the shadows are primarily formed by the translucent ground itself, refined through a superposition of multiple semi-transparent and transparent glazes. The medium is a custom studio blend of Sun-thickened Linseed Oil, ensuring a rich, enamel-like flow and deep optical resonance. To guarantee maximum archival stability, the surface is protected by a professional dual-layer varnish system (Laropal A81 and Regalrez 1094) enhanced with Tinuvin® UV stabilizers, providing structural and aesthetic stability for generations to come.

The Artist's Perspective | Technical & Symbolic Context

In Ariadne, I chose to merge the timelessness of myth with a contemporary visual language. Technically, this piece is an exploration of RSG (Rabbit Skin Glue) emulsion mixed with sun-thickened linseed oil. This medium allows for a unique play of light—where the white pigment, used even in the glazing layers, creates a pearlescent, translucent skin tone that feels alive.
The composition is a quiet moment of preparation. Ariadne, depicted with a modern look and long, flowing hair, is not just a character in a story, but the architect of a rescue. Behind her, the labyrinth—etched like an ancient map on the wall—represents the complexities we all face, while the sword leaning beside her signifies the tools we provide for those we love. The red thread, a vibrant pulse in her hands, is the line between being lost and being found.

Symbols:

The Red Thread (Guidance), The Labyrinth (The Human Mind), The Sword (Action and Protection), Multi-colored Yarn (Choices of Fate).

Love is not the act of entering the labyrinth for someone else, but the courage to hold the thread that leads them back to themselves. We are all Ariadne, weaving the lifelines for those brave enough to face their own Minotaurs.
